River

That lovely, calming sound of water moving quickly over a weir is something special. I have a place—a park bench—where I listen to exactly that. Sheltered under a large tree, I can relax for a few idyllic moments and calm the system. I think everyone needs a space like this. It isn’t miles from anywhere; it sits just off-centre from a local town. Cars pass close by, people come and go, parking in the adjoining car park, but somehow it remains a peaceful, soothing sanctuary.

It’s not just the gentle murmur of flowing water, either. From my seat, I can see the river wind its way slowly below me. Branches from the banks tickle its surface, and eddies form around the muddle of shallow pools and rocks. Ducks fight the current while a heron stands motionless, waiting to strike at its unsuspecting prey. I have even heard of otters roaming the overgrown banks, though I have yet to see any. I look forward to that, as well as catching another glimpse of the local kingfisher, which appeared to me just once before for a few glorious minutes.

Here, life has a rhythm—a continuity interrupted only by nature’s own making. Rain brings flooding; wind bends the trees and adds its own orchestra to the quiet. In those moments, my peaceful setting becomes exhilarating, the heart pumps faster, and the senses heighten. I love it, and I’m not the only one. I bring my dog here to tear through the grass or take a sudden plunge—whether into the cooling relief of summer or the more frigid, turbulent waters of spring and autumn. It is shallow enough, but I keep my eyes peeled. I see children swimming here, too. I wonder at their bravery, or perhaps their complete absence of worry, as they throw themselves off the riverbank. The hidden dangers below seem irrelevant and inconsequential when their minds are in full play mode. It is joyful to watch, even if it occasionally makes you wince, anxious for their safety.

Here, today, it is mild and quiet. A light breeze, an overcast sky, but the river runs on—that constant, rhythmic pulse of one of nature’s rich and vibrant veins.
